In his book, Be Complete, Warren Wiersbe tells the following story:

“Years ago, Northwestern-University had a life-saving team that passengers on Lake Michigan boats. On September 8, 1860, the Lady Elign floundered near the campus, and a ministerial student named Edward Spenser personally rescued seventeen people. The exposure from that episode permanently damaged his health and he was unable to continue preparation for the ministry. Some years later when he died, it was noted that not one of the seventeen people he had saved, ever came back to thank him.”
