Christians Put on Notice

The world state sponsor of terror, Iran, has just made a deal with the P5+1 members of the UN Security Council, which includes the five permanent members of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as rotating member Germany regarding the proliferation of nuclear weapons. While these negotiations were taking place, the people of Iran took to the streets chanting, “Death to America.” With this agreement, Americans, especially Christians, have been put on notice. It would seem God has turned us over to the cursings we have chosen as a nation. I am reminded of God’s warning in Deuteronomy 28:15, 36:

“But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: … The Lord will bring you and the king whom you set over you to a nation which neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you shall serve other gods—wood and stone.”

Before the children of Israel turned from the Lord and embraced the false idols of the nations surrounding them, God warned them. He gave them the blessings and the curses. If they followed God, His commandments and statutes, He would bless them. If they chose the false idols, He would curse them. In spite of the warning, the Jewish people did not heed the warning and they were sent into captivity. God did exactly what He promised:

“The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail” (Deuteronomy 28:43-44).

They would become the tail and the heathen nations would become the head. If you go back and read Deuteronomy 28-30, you see the heart of the Lord. He was warning and He was also pleading with them to remain faithful. He knew their hearts; He knew they would depart from Him and yet He promised He would be with them. After the warning, He asked them:

I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; (Deuteronomy 30:19).

That is the heart of God’s message. We have to choose. We either choose life or death. It is all on us. God will not choose for us. He will warn us and show us the blessings or the curses we will receive but in the end, we have to choose God—choose life.

As a nation, the United States has turned from God and embraced the idols of this world. We have run to sin and mocked holiness. We murder babies and protect murderers. We have betrayed God’s people and befriended His enemies. We have chosen death over life.

Looking at the choices made by our nation, and the future we face, it would be perfectly normal to be depressed and overwhelmed, but I am a Christian. I am one of God’s remnant. I have not bowed my knee to Baal. Remember, even when God allowed Israel to be sent into captivity, He still had His remnant: “Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him” (1 Kings 19:18). He preserved those who were faithful to Him, even in the midst of the curses.

God not only preserved those who remained faithful to Him, but He gave them a promise through Jeremiah the prophet:

For thus says the Lord: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord, and I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the Lord, and I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive (Jeremiah 29:10-14).

This promise is for us today. We have to hold onto the promises of God and not be overwhelmed by the things happening around us. It is time to turn back to the Lord and call upon Him. He will hear us and He will deliver us. God is waiting for the hearts of His people to turn back to Him. He is waiting for us to keep His commandments and statutes.

For all those who call themselves Christians and yet betray God’s Word by embracing the things of this world, heed the warning from Isaiah 5:20: Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

God has given us His blessings and curses as a promise and a warning. He would choose to bless us and not curse us, but we have to choose life. We have to choose God. Today is the day we need to turn from the false idols of this world and choose God.
